In 2018, I visited Marfa, Texas to write about Robert Irwin's untitled (dawn to dusk, 2016). However, the trip led to a second essay, about W.G. Sebald. I spent my childhood near the ruin of an old military base in North Texas, and on the trip to Judd's Chinati, the echos were overwhelming:
